I had to remove the rudder, when it was turned, water ran out. "That's normal" says one, "a new rudder needed" the other. What do you mean? from the outside, the rudder looks intact with a solid brass rod.

I'm not sure. I don't like the idea of water running out of the rudder.

I guess the concern here is you don't know the state of things inside the rudder, whether the rudder post is corroded, any wooden part is rotten etc However the only way to find out would be to split it open which is quite 'invasive'. My bilge keels drip water after taking the boat out and I am planning to grind down the surface and repair at some point

It is exactly like that. I assume that the rudder will hold out until October, at the latest when the boat comes out of the water, I will examine it again. Can you see from the photo whether it is the original rudder blade from 1979? It includes a solid brass rod. In that case it would be good to know how it was made. Otherwise it will hardly be possible to determine where and how it was done.
